Number one contender matches for “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes’ WWE Championship has been announced.

At WWE WrestleMania 40 Night Two, Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns to win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in the main event.

After his confrontation with The Rock on the Raw After WrestleMania 40, many fans have been questioning who would be the first challenger for Cody’s title.

Ahead of the April 12 edition of WWE SmackDown, General Manager Nick Aldis announced a series of number one contender matches that will determine the next opponent for Cody Rhodes. The caption reads:

Get ready for two huge Triple Threat Matches to determine who will square off one-on-one next week with the winner going on to face the new WWE Champion @CodyRhodes!

The two triple threat matches on tonight’s show will see LA Knight vs. Santos Escobar vs. Bobby Lashley and Kevin Owens vs. Rey Mysterio vs. AJ Styles.

The winners of the two three-way matches will face each other one-on-one on next week’s April 19 episode of SmackDown.

The winner of next week’s bout will move on to face Cody for the WWE Championship. It has not been confirmed when the title match will take place at the time of this writing.
