New Details On More CM Punk Controversy Within AEW AEW

UPDATE – Fightful has provided an update on the interview, claiming that Punk reportedly ‘shot’ on a top AEW star.

With CM Punk’s AEW return officially set to take place this Saturday, his name has once again appeared in the news today.

The CM Punk and AEW rollercoaster since September is almost over, with him set to team with FTR against Jay White, Juice Robinson and Samoa Joe on Saturday night’s debut episode of AEW Collision.

However, it seems as though there will be one more hurdle before Punk makes his triumphant return to Chicago in just over 48 hours time.

Earlier today, Wade Keller on PWTorch seemed to hint at another story regarding Punk dropping soon, with him saying:

“I am under the impression between now and Saturday, there’s going to be something that comes out that media wise that is not gonna help matters, probably. I don’t mean to be cryptic but I haven’t heard the details or seen enough to say much but yea, I just don’t know. I just think it’s gonna be one of those weeks, I’ll put it that way…From what I’m hearing behind the scenes in AEW, it’s just gonna be one of those weeks.”

While Keller’s initial quote was rather cryptic, Fightful Select (subscription required) has since provided an update on what is set to happen.

Firstly, it was reported by Fightful that there was a planned match between Punk and KENTA for AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door next weekend.

Shortly after those reports, Fightful was told that Punk ‘wasn’t thrilled’ with working with KENTA, and that ‘he may come across badly in an interview.

Fightful notes that the interview in question was one Punk had done with ESPN, which is supposed to drop sometime soon, where Punk spoke about a number of different topics.

One of the topics mentioned was The Elite, with word getting back to several members of the AEW roster at last night’s (June 14) AEW Dynamite tapings, with some of it not going over well based on second-hand retellings.

Fightful notes that the interview was set up and monitored by AEW, but Punk spoke in a way that would ‘blur the lines’ and create buzz for upcoming AEW shows.

Specifically, Fightful says that they had heard that Punk answered some questions in a way that would make the audience wonder if it was him angling for a potential story, or if he was shooting.

It is not known what will ultimately make it into the ESPN interview, but Fightful heard that the interview was conducted last week, and that Punk was very aware that his comments could come off as polarising based on his responses.

A video aired on last night’s Dynamite show hyping up Punk’s return, where he claimed that he had a ‘lot of things to get off his chest’.
