Backstage details have emerged on Sting and Darby Allin’s AEW World Tag Team Championship victory on Dynamite.
Sting captured his first championship in over 12 years on last night’s AEW Dynamite show in Phoenix, when he and Darby Allin defeated Big Bill and Ricky Starks to capture the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
Sting and Darby were attacked by Matthew and Nicholas Jackson after their championship win, setting up Sting’s final match in Greensboro at AEW Revolution.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), Sting was said to be ‘adamantly and long against’ winning the AEW Tag Team Championship, and was against even competing for them for a long time.
However, some in AEW said that, from the company’s standpoint, Sting and Darby should have been given a title shot long before last night due to being undefeated as a tag team.
The decision for Sting and Darby to win the titles was said to have been made ‘well in advance’, with Sting agreeing to go along with it.
Those that Fightful spoke to said that Sting was all smiles backstage after the match.
Sting was also a major part in the decision to face the Young Bucks in his final match at AEW Revolution, as well as the planned location of the show being changed from the Mid West to Greensboro in order to fit Sting’s history.
