Mr Kennedy Recalls Being Told He Would Be World Champion WWE

There have been many different ‘what ifs’ throughout WWE’s 50+ year history of stars that seemed destined to reach the mountain top in the company but, for one reason or another, didn’t make it.

One of those names was Mr. Kennedy, who seemed fated to become world champion in WWE, especially after he captured the Money In The Bank briefcase at WrestleMania 23.

Kennedy famously became the first person to win the briefcase but not end up cashing it in, with only Otis since joining him. Kennedy was beaten by Edge for the case in May 2007, before the Rated R Superstar cashed the contract in just one (four at the time of airing) day later on the Undertaker on a SmackDown show, becoming World Heavyweight Champion.

Kennedy recently spoke to NBC Sports Boston, where he reflected on the run, noting that he was told outright by WWE that he would be world champion, and take the title from the Undertaker.

He said:

“I can’t change things that happened in the past; it was kind of crazy. They had already told me two or three days earlier that I was going to be winning the title from [Undertaker]. ‘Taker was hurt too, he needed to have biceps surgery, so [they said], ‘We need this title off ‘Taker. What we’re going to do is we’re going to have him in this cage match, he’s going to barely sneak out alive and then somebody else is going to come out and beat him up some more and then you’re going to come out and cash in your Money in the Bank briefcase and you’re going to be the new champion’.”

Kennedy was also diagnosed with an injury, which is why he ultimately ended up droppig the briefcase to Edge. Unfortunately for Kennedy, his injury was not as severe as the company had first feared, meaning he never needed to drop the briefcase.

Edge himself also went down with an injury after he won the title, leading to the belt being vacated and won by The Great Khali.
