Fresh off securing their first IWGP Tag Team Championships, Aussie Open (Mark Davis & Kyle Fletcher) have only gone and already added another set of titles to their names, that being the NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team Championships.
To win the titles Aussie Open would defeat the former champions the Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) and the all-star team of Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kazuchika Okada in a triple-threat tag match at Saturday’s (April 15) NJPW Capital Collision Event from Washington, DC.
Following their victory Aussie Open would label themselves the ‘best tag-team in the world’, which was dutifully answered by the live crowd with chants of ‘FTR’ in response.
A match between the new AEW Tag Team Champions FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) and the IWGP and now NJPW STRONG Tag Team Champions Aussie Open was recently teased by both AEW and NJPW via their respective Twitter accounts.
The tease has led to speculation regarding the match perhaps taking place at June’s second annual AEW & NJPW crossover event Forbidden Door.
While this has not yet been followed up on TV, Aussie Open did recently compete in their first IWGP Tag Title defence on this week’s Rampage, where they defeated the Best Friends.
On the same show FTR would provide their first comments following their title victory over The Gunn’s at last week’s Dynamite.
As well as Forbidden Door, FTR have also been teasing a potential dream match for AEW’s historic All In event from Wembley Arena on August 27th.
