Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson is set to finally make his in-ring debut for WWE at this Sunday’s NXT Great American Bash premium live event.
On the show, Steveson will take on Baron Corbin following their interaction on this week’s episode of the show.
The segment on NXT revolved around Steveson ‘deciding his future’, and while it may appear as though he chose NXT, he has not ruled out a return to amateur wrestling.
Steveson spoke to Star Tribune ahead of his NXT debut, where he discussed his future in amateur wrestling, to which he said:
“Amateur wrestling is my passion, and my fire still burns for it … I still have the year of [college] eligibility, and always will be ready to compete for USA.”
When asked how he feels about his upcoming WWE debut, Steveson said:
”Very excited. First time people are seeing me. Thankful for the opportunity.”
Brandon Eggum, the coach for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, chimed in on Steveson’s status, saying:
“This does not close the door on Gable’s college eligibility or his ability to return to the Gophers. We are excited to watch him do what he does best and put on a show this weekend in his WWE debut.”
Gable made his debut on NXT last month, where he trained Eddie Thorpe for his NXT Underground match against Damon Kemp.
Shawn Michaels confirmed on today’s media call ahead of the show that Cody Rhodes will feature in the intro for this Sunday’s Great American Bash event.
