Destroyed by a Canadian?

https://youtu.be/SI0lmZvJ70U

As promised earlier this week, we got to see Petey Williams vs. Josh Mathews – sort of. The whole point of this segment was to progress towards Redemption, where Petey Williams will face Matt Sydal for the X-Division Championship.

Much to my surprise, this was an in-ring segment. I had suggested in my preview that this would be something completely different, and they wouldn’t actually have anything resembling a match – although I hoped that Mathews would be destroyed by the Canadian, Petey Williams.

The segment was actually quite fun, with Mathews avoiding the fight by dodging around the ring and stretching in the corner to gain some time. The crowd got involved with their chant of “Josh can’t wrestle”, which was also great to hear.

It’s obvious from the outset that Mathews can’t wrestle, but we all knew that already. Every piece of offense is weak and very obviously fake, but that really is alright in this situation – this isn’t designed to be a five-star showdown.

Honestly? There is nothing quite like seeing Josh Mathews run around the ring screaming. It’s hard for me to admit because I can’t stand Mathews, but he was great in this whole segment. This character and link to Matt Sydal are brilliant and more than anything, it’s good old-fashioned wrestling fun. Sonjay on commentary really ties the whole segment together, as he completely loses control and laughs at Mathews attempts to fight.

After five minutes, the match was called off as Sydal attacked Petey Williams for the DQ. This whole ‘match’ really turned the relationship between Sydal and Mathews on its head, with Sydal being the one to cause the distractions.

If you didn’t like this segment, then you don’t have a sense of humor. Wrestling can be fun.
