Plans for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at the upcoming AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view have reportedly been revealed.
On Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite, Hiroshi Tanahashi confronted CM Punk, appearing to set up an AEW World Title contest for the June 26 crossover event.
Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Punk vs Tanahashi is listed for the event, as is NJPW’s Kazuchika Okada vs AEW’s Hangman Page.
Indicating that the bout would be for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title, Meltzer noted:
“The IWGP Title match won’t be able to be announced until the (Dynamite) show on the 15th in St. Louis 11 days before the (Forbidden Door) show. I had seen a lineup which was interesting because it was Punk & Tanahashi for the AEW (World) Title, and the other match was Okada & Adam Page, which actually could be a hell of a match for the IWGP (World Heavyweight) Title. I don’t know if that will happen, change, or whatever. Then the rest of the show is probably a lot of tag matches between factions on each side.”
Hangman Page notably lost his AEW World Title to CM Punk at Double or Nothing on Sunday, May 29.
While Kazuchika Okada currently holds the title, he is slated to defend the gold against Bullet Club leader Jay White at NJPW Dominion on June 12. It is possible that White will win the gold, and Okada vs Page will be a non-title singles match.
White has been featured prominently in Forbidden Door advertising, and was part of the initial event announcement on the April 20 edition of Dynamite.
