AEW Dynasty saw the tease for a championship vs. championship feud in the moments after Kenny Omega’s victory.
Kenny Omega was able to retain the AEW International Championship against Ricochet and Speedball Bailey on the April 6 pay-per-view.
With Omega celebrating his victory, Kazuchika Okada would come to the ring, setting up a potential champion vs. champion feud.
Okada is the current AEW Continental Champion and has a long history with Omega, something that the International Champion reflected upon in a post-show Twitter post.
With a shared history dating back to their time in New Japan-Pro Wrestling, Omega noted that “some things never change” in a Tweet that can be seen below this news story.
The post would be accompanied by four images, including the staredown at AEW Dynasty, showcasing their history which dates back to 2015.
Over in NJPW, Omega was a member of Bullet Club while Okada was part of CHAOS.
Across the years, Okada and Omega have faced each other in multiple tag team and singles matches.
Among their catalog of encounters was the IWGP Heavyweight Championship match at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11 in 2017 which saw Okada retain the title.
June 2017 would see Okada take Omega to a time-limit draw, retaining the IWGP Heavyweight Championship once again at NJPW Dominion.
Kenny Omega scored his first singles win over Okada during that August’s G1 Climax tournament in a non-title match.
The following year, once again at NJPW Dominion, Omega would be victorious in his quest for the IWGP Heavyweight Champion in a Two Out Of Three Falls match that went for over sixty minutes.
They were last in an NJPW ring, teaming together to defeat United Empire (Aaron Henare & Jeff Cobb) at NJPW New Year Dash in January 2023.
