With his WrestleMania 39 win, Kevin Owens has made history in WWE as he becomes the first to accomplish a landmark feat.
Kevin Owens may be the sixteenth ‘modern’ WWE Grand Slam Champion but he is the first that can also claim themselves as a Universal Title holder for their World Championship.
As Wrestling Stats & Info noted on Twitter,
At 38 years old, @FightOwensFight is now the 16th *modern* @WWE Grand Slam Champion, and the FIRST to accomplish the feat with the Universal Title as his world championship.
– IC Title: Sept. 2015
– Universal: Aug. 2016
– US Title: @WrestleMania 33
– Tag Title: #WrestleMania 39
Interesting as well, the only other ‘modern’ Grand Slam Champion that achieved their title victories in a similar order (Intercontinental title first, then World title, United States title with the Tag Titles coming last) was Kurt Angle.
After a stunning series of near falls throughout the match, there was a wild final sequence which was the stuff of classic professional wrestling art.
In the final sequence, Sami Zayn hit three Helluva Kicks on Jey Uso to capture the pinfall victory and become the NEW Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions.
