Tonight’s episode of WWE NXT on the USA Network opened with a big title change that may have come as a bit of a surprise to some.
Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner defeated Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher to win the NXT Tag Team Championship, but it wasn’t quite that simple.
Thatcher, standing in for Pete Dunne who can’t travel at the minute, abandoned the match while Riddle was being worked over by the Imperium members.
Riddle tried his best to mount a comeback, but couldn’t manage and Barthel and Aichner landed a European Bomb to win the straps.
What’s perhaps most interesting about this is that it was Pete Dunne who handpicked Thatcher to stand in for him as Riddle partner, so who takes the blame?
In a backstage interview just after the match, Thatcher explained that he was sick of Riddle’s goofy antics, and then the two got into a brawl. A bit later a match was confirmed for later in the show between the two but Thatcher ambushed Riddle backstage again.
In the main event, Riddle escaped by getting leverage over Thatcher and pinning him, but Thatcher locked him in a Fujiwara Armbar as the show went off the air, with Riddle screaming in pain.
