Earlier today, it was reported that the planned AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door match between CM Punk and KENTA was no longer set for the show.
It was reported that the match being scrapped was on KENTA’s end rather than Punk’s and that him tweeting that the match would ‘never happen’ was a direct response to him being removed from the match.
In an update from Fightful Select (subscription required), there were big AEW programming plans for KENTA to set up the program with Punk ahead of Forbidden Door, which obviously will now no longer happen.
In terms of Punk’s status for Forbidden Door, the report names Satoshi Kojima, El Phantasmo and Jeff Cobb as names that have been pitched internally as potential replacement opponents for Punk.
Alternatively, there has been a pitch for Punk to simply be a part of the broadcast rather than actually wrestling on the show.
The report also notes that adjustments were made to AEW programming this week, as noted by Ibou from WrestlePurists on Twitter.
Kojima has made one previous appearance in AEW, facing off against Jon Moxley at AEW All Out in 2021.
Both El Phantasmo and Jeff Cobb featured on last year’s Forbidden Door event.
