Penta has officially retained his WWE Intercontinental Championship in the six-man ladder match at WrestleMania 42.
The match featured defending champion Penta, Rey Mysterio, Rusev, Je’Von Evans, Rusev and JD McDonagh.
Naturally, the match played host to several major feats of athleticism and chaos given the ladder match environment.
One of the most impressive of those was an OG Cutter from Je’Von Evans who flew off the top of the corner turnbuckle to Rusev who was near the top of the ladder.
However, Evans couldn’t capitalize for the win as Penta followed up with a Mexican Destroyer to Evans, allowing him to climb the ladder and pull his title belt down for the win.
It was the second match of the night, with the first seeing Oba Femi score a decisive win against Brock Lesnar before Lesnar seemingly retired.
The Important Role Of The WWE Intercontinental Championship
The Intercontinental Championship plays an important role in WWE, as it often gives us a look at which stars are destined to one day become World Champion.
That has always been the traditional viewpoint – its winners go on to main event success afterwards – although there were certainly a number of years where that wasn’t the case.
A period of time under Vince McMahon saw the Intercontinental Title barely even ever defended at Mania for years and years, and a lot of its winners never really went on to achieve much afterwards.
However, Triple H has restored the launchpad approach, with recent winners including GUNTHER and Jey Uso going on to win the World Title shortly after, and Bron Breakker inevitably joining that list at some point in the future.
The question now is, will the same be the case for Penta following his win at WrestleMania tonight.
