In recent months, there has been a lot more interaction between WWE NXT and the main roster.
This includes Dominik Mysterio and Becky Lynch becoming the North American and NXT Women’s Championship respectively, which has led to an increase in viewership for the NXT show.
Recently, the two shows featuring Becky got the show it’s two highest ratings since 2020, and the reason for this recent loading up of NXT has been revealed.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), there has been a recent increased importance put on the NXT viewership numbers on Tuesday nights, which is a big reason for the recent main roster stars appearing on the show.
WWE sources said that the reason is due to the company wanting to increase their television viewership numbers in order to better leverage a rights fee deal or package, with the aim of showing potential suitors that adjustments can increase the ratings.
This change came prior to WWE’s announcement that SmackDown would be leaving FOX and returning to the USA Network next year.
Of particular note, WWE were said to be ‘ecstatic’ about the huge numbers that Becky Lynch vs Tiffany Stratton drew for the September 12 episode of the show where Lynch captured the title.
The show was the first time an episode of NXT peaked at over a million viewers in over three years.
