Report: Former WCW Commentator Tony Schiavone Signs With AEW

According to a report on Wrestling Observer Radio, former WWF, WCW and TNA commentator Tony Schiavone has made an agreement to sign with AEW.

Schiavone was WCW’s play-by-play commentator on its flagship Monday Nitro show between 1990 and 2001, and currently commentates for Major League Wrestling (MLW).

PWInsider is now reporting that the deal was made on Thursday and that he will continue to work alongside MLW as a commentator.

He reportedly chose AEW over a return to WWE.

If the report is accurate, he would join a team which currently comprises Jim Ross, Excalibur and Alex Marvez. Most believe Schiavone would likely join Ross and Excalibur for weekly commentary duties.

Interestingly, MLW owner Cort Bauer has previously stated that Schiavone is signed to an exclusive contract with the promotion which would mean he can’t appear on AEW TV.

“Unless AEW elects to reach out, Tony Schiavone cannot proceed with AEW or any other company doing anything. I was unaware of him doing the digital stuff until I read it in this week’s Observer,” Bauer said.

Schiavone himself previously denied that he is working with Cody on Twitter, but this seems to have changed.

Now that both the Observer and PWInsider are reporting it, it’s fair to say it’s almost definitely true.
