Johnson and his partner Tony Atlas became the WWF’s first ever African-American World Tag Team Champions on November 15, 1983. They defeated the Wild Samoans when one Samoan hit the other with a chair by mistake.
Johnson’s career spanned multiple decades as he worked in the NWA and WWF. He made his debut in 1964 and competed until his retirement in 1991. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008 by his son, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
