Roman Reigns has surpassed yet another major milestone in his record-breaking run as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.
With WrestleMania 40 just over two months away, much has been made of the Tribal Chief’s potential opponent at the Grandest Stage of Them All and whether we will finally see the end of his almost three and a half year run as champion.
While that remains to be seen, what we do know is that the Head of the Table continues to etch his name into WWE’s record books with every passing day as champion.
Having now held the title for 1240 days as of this time of writing Reigns has now surpassed WWE Hall of Famer Bruno Sammartino’s second WWE Championship run, which totalled at 1237 days between December 10, 1973 to April 30, 1977.
This ranks Reigns’ time holding the WWE Universal Championship specifically as the fourth longest single reign of all-time, while his WWE Championship run currently stands at 659 days.
Despite WWE merging both the WWE and Universal Championship’s together into the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, the company do still count both belts as separate entities.
Only three other men have longer tenures as champion from this point on; that being: Hulk Hogan (1474 days), Bob Backlund (2138 days) and finally Sammartino again (4040 days).
To surpass Hogan and rank third all-time on the list, Reigns would need to hold the title until September 12, 2024; something that simply cannot be ruled out happening considering how far WWE have come already.
One of Reigns’ recent championship opponents and cousin Jey Uso recently commented on Reigns’ potential WrestleMania 40 opponent The Rock and what a match between his family members would mean if it were to happen.
