‘Oh My God, I Don’t Know What I’m Doing’ – Sol Ruca Recalls Not Thinking She Would Be Hired After First WWE Tryout Promo Exercise

Sol Ruca has recalled her doubts regarding whether she would successfully make it through her WWE tryout after her first promo exercise experience.

In just over four years since signing with WWE in March 2022, Sol Ruca has ascended the ranks of NXT and now Monday Night Raw, to become one of the company’s leading lights for the future.

Becoming NXT Women’s North American Champion, Women’s Speed Champion and, most recently Women’s Intercontinental Champion, Sol Ruca has consistently shown her athletic ability, which comes naturally to her following her background in gymnastics and tumbling before arriving in the world of pro wrestling.

While her athleticism is what initially got her confident that she could succeed in her transition into WWE, she had no experience with promos, and in her recent appearance on The Nikki & Brie Show, Ruca opened up about how her first experience of that went during her WWE tryout.

Ruca recalled:

“I was like ‘Oh my God.’ I honestly did not think I was gonna make it because we have like the promo portions of the tryout, I knew once we were doing the in-ring stuff I got the hang of it pretty quickly just with my gymnastics background we were doing rolls and bumps came pretty easily, but yeah, it was the promo aspect.

“The first day, it was just an introduction promo, I didn’t really know what that meant. I think I went second or third, and the first girl, she was on the indies so she had this whole character, this whole elaborate story, she had this punchy out line and it was so cool. And then I go up there and I’m like ‘Hey guys, my name’s Calyx and I’m from California, and I went to school here and I did this.’ And yeah that’s it (laughs) and then I just sat back down, I was like ‘Oh my God, I don’t know what I’m doing.’”

Ruca fared better in her second WWE promo exercise later in the tryout however, with the Hawaii native being given the task of cutting a promo on a current champion, which happened to be Becky Lynch – the same star she would dethrone for the Women’s Intercontinental Title years later. Her follow up promo exercise proved to be enough of an improvement for WWE to take a chance on Ruca, as they offered her a contract based on that, and her impressive in-ring work.

Ruca continued:

“That was the first promo exercise we had, and then I think at the end of the tryout we had another one where they gave us a prompt and it was like ‘cut a promo on a current champion.’ And I believe I cut one on Becky I’m pretty sure.

“So when I got the call they were like ‘We were really impressed with your in-ring work and from the first day to the last day you improved so much with your promo that we’re gonna offer you a contract.’ I was like ‘Oh my God,’ I was just like in shock to be honest.

“And then yeah just all the thoughts rushing in about what does this mean about – because I was living in Hawaii – having to move there, I think we were supposed to move within a few months.

“But I was ready for it, I think I was in the perfect time in my life where I didn’t have anything really solid where I was living. And just within jobs and stuff, with social media it’s not really guaranteed you’re gonna get paid every month because you’re on these few month contracts or few week contracts. So I was excited to have something solidified and just have another outlet for my athleticism and just to be an athlete again, because I was really missing that when I graduated.”
