While much of the current online chatter is understandably revolving around Stone Cold Steve Austin’s WrestleMania 39 status, it’s easy to forget just how remarkable it is that Austin wrestling is even in the conversation.
Prior to last year’s WrestleMania, and his KO Show segment – turned match with Kevin Owens came to be, the idea of Austin wrestling ever again seemed like a distant fantasy.
After all, it had been a whole 19 years since Austin’s prior match at WrestleMania 19 against The Rock, so fans could easily be forgiven for losing hope.
So why exactly did Austin decide to don his mudhole stomping boots one more time?
Speaking to Ryan Satin’s Out of Character Podcast Austin would reveal what went into the decision, and why Kevin Owens was his preferred opponent.
“I turned them down several times until they kept coming back with different creative.
“(Kevin Owens) was always in the conversation. I was down with that because I love that guy. He’s awesome.”
As for Owens, Austin was clearly a massive fan, and in Owens, the inspiration from Austin is evident.
So that may be why when Austin gave Owens some stiff shots during the match, Owens never responded with any ‘receipts’.
“On the inside, I was knocking his head off so many times because I didn’t throw a punch in 19 years.
I told him when we got finished, I said, ‘Dude, I cannot believe you didn’t give me a receipt out there.’ That’s the good-natured heart of K.O.
He was thrilled to be out there and I was thrilled to be with him. It took some talking, we got everything lined up. You saw what happened.”
Austin recently addressed the possibility of another WWE return, which you can read more about right here.
