Tony Khan has praised an AEW star for ‘saving the day’ at All In 2023 following the backstage incident with CM Punk.
CM Punk competed in his final AEW match at AEW All In London in 2023, where he faced off with Samoa Joe for the ‘Real’ AEW World Championship in the show’s opening match.
Prior to the match, Punk was involved in a backstage altercation with Jack Perry following Perry’s match on the Buy In, which led to CM Punk being fired by the company a week later.
Footage for the altercation aired on Dynamite last April, with the footage showing Samoa Joe stepping in to break up the altercation.
Speaking on Q101, Tony Khan discussed the event, calling it the most stressful pay-per-view of his time running AEW, praising Samoa Joe for ‘saving the day’ following the incident.
He said:
“The most stressful pay-per-view is the first Wembley, by far. Samoa Joe saved the day there. I think it was very good that Samoa Joe de-escalated the situation and also that Samoa Joe made sure fans got the match they had paid to see, and he went out there and everything was great, and he was such a professional, and that exemplifies Samoa Joe both in and out of the ring.
“He was so great that day and many other times, he’s one of the most incredible people I’ve ever met, what a leader Samoa Joe is, in the ring and out of the ring. A captain, a true captain, and I’m very blessed that he’s in AEW.”
