Truth Behind WWE’s Plans For Matt Riddle Confirmed WWE

The truth behind WWE’s plans for Matt Riddle, specifically the 2022 Money in the Bank ladder match, has been confirmed.

Riddle recently claimed that he was planned to win the match before Vince McMahon changed plans last minute to Austin Theory winning.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer has now revealed that Riddle was considered for WWE Money in the Bank win in 2022, but wasn’t nailed on as the planned winner, saying:

“That did happen in the sense that Vince McMahon changed it to Austin Theory, but there were several (potential winners), it was never 100% anyone.

“They had not figured it out until the very last minute.

“Matt Riddle was absolutely one of the people, perhaps even the favorite, but it wasn’t like it was Matt Riddle and then changed to Austin Theory.

“It was ‘perhaps Matt Riddle’.”

Meltzer also confirmed that Riddle was never seriously considered to win the 2022 Royal Rumble match, which is something else that he’d claimed.

Highlights from the 2022 WWE Money in the Bank can be seen below this news story, including Theory becoming Mr Money in the Bank.

Theory would eventually cash in on Seth Rollins for the United States Championship in November 2022 and fail to leave with that championship.

On September 22, Matt Riddle was released from WWE after five years with the company.

He has recently opened up about his release from the company, saying he “loved every second” of his time there.

Riddle has also revealed scrapped plans for a tag team run with Jeff Hardy, with the now-AEW star feeling ‘uncomfortable’ about the suggested team name being the Hardy Bros.

On January 13, Riddle will make his New Japan in-ring debut at NJPW Battle in the Valley in a tag team match against Zack Sabre Jr and Bad Dude Tito.
