TV Show Featuring CM Punk Canceled AEW

Starz has cancelled the Stephen Amell-led television series Heels after just two seasons and sixteen episodes.

The series focused on the rivalry between two brothers, played by Amell and Alexander Ludwig, as they try to seize control of their late father’s wrestling promotion.

Debuting in August 2021, the series was renewed for a second season that November which would air in July 2023.

On September 25, 2023, Variety broke the news that Heels was one of four series to be canceled by Starz.

Per the report from Variety, “Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting will not get new seasons at the cable network, while “The Venery of Samantha Bird” Season 1 is being scrapped without airing.”

Both CM Punk and AJ Lee had guest roles in Heels, with Punk playing Ricky Rabies and Lee as Elle Dorado.

Punk would appear on the series as Rabies, in the season 1 episodes Cheap Heat and Double Turn, and in the Season 2 episode Heavy Heads.

The character of Ricky Rabies was based on the late Tracy Smothers according to Punk in an interview from August 2021.

Smothers wrestled for WWF and ECW in the late 1990s, winning the ECW World Tag Team Championship in 1997. He is also known for his runs with the likes of Smokey Mountain Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Heels has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with both critics and the audience holding both seasons in high regard.

Amell previously headed the cast of the Arrow television series as Oliver Queen and would go on to make appearances in WWE, Ring of Honor and AEW, along with appearing at the All In event in 2018.

His WWE debut in 2015 would would see Amell and Neville (currently PAC in AEW) defeating the team of Stardust (Cody Rhodes) and King Barrett at SummerSlam.

During his time in WWE, Amell would strike up a friendship with Cody Rhodes that would see Rhodes appear on Arrow and Amell go on to make appearances alongside Rhodes in his post-WWE run in ROH and AEW.
