UPDATE: The side behind the decision for WWE Raw to move to TV-14 has reportedly been revealed. More at this link.
An update on the earlier report that WWE Raw would be moving from TV-PG to TV-14 rating effective immediately.
As previously reported, numerous highly reliable sources within wrestling including Andrew Zarian and Sean Ross Sapp had noted that there would be a move from TV-PG rating to TV-14 rating for the longstanding television series, WWE Raw.
However, a previously noted detail from the initial memo sent out within the USA Network this morning, briefing network staff on the change noted it effective for the episode airing July 18. It has now been noted by Fightful Select and Zarian that the note was reportedly sent out prematurely as the date for the switch has not yet been finalized.
Fightful also notes that there were conflicting internal messages regarding the change within USA Network and WWE has not responded with any official comment at time of writing.
An interesting note in general regarding television ratings in that unlike an external rating body such as the Motion Picture Association for movies or Entertainment Software Ratings Board for video games, cable television shows do not have a standardized measure to retain a TV-PG status nor move toward presumably racier TV-14 rated content, rather it is a guideline.
TV-14 programs typically are noted with a Federal Communication Commission guideline:
“Programs rated TV-14 contain material that parents or adult guardians may find unsuitable for children under the age of 14. The FCC warns that “Parents are cautioned to exercise some care in monitoring this program and are cautioned against letting children under the age of 14 watch unattended.” Programs with this rating contain intensely suggestive dialogue, strong coarse language, intense sexual situations or intense violence.”
WrestleVotes also reported that Raw moving to TV-14 is something that has been discussed for “years”.
WWE Raw has been rated TV-PG since July 22, 2008.
