In a recent interview, Marc Mero discussed what Vince McMahon’s reactions were the first time he was introduced to Sable.
“Anyways, we fly up to New York and we walk into Vince’s office with my ex-wife, Rena. And he looked at her and he just goes, ‘I have got to put her on TV.’ I mean, it was like he just knew that at this moment he saw this character, Sable, and we had all these names that we were trying to decide from and we chose the name, Sable. And that’s how her (pro wrestling) career started.”
Sable, whose real name is Rena, was married to Mero from 1994 until their divorce in 2004.
Mero was a big star with WCW wrestling under the name Johnny B. Badd prior to signing with the WWE, including winning the WCW World Television Championship on 3 occasions. His popularity and skill are what allowed him to land a very lucrative deal with McMahon’s company and, as such, he was able to request many perks in his contract.
The biggest of these perks that Mero was able to secure was getting paid guaranteed money and having the WWE pay for travel expenses for his wife at the time to go everywhere he went. This included when he went to meet with Vince to sign his contract, creating the first time McMahon got to meet and see Sable.
Both Mero and Sable are now officially retired from professional wrestling, although her current husband, WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, wrestles once in a while.
