Among rumors of potentially joining WWE, Kazuchika Okada has filed for a new trademark in the United States.
With the former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion’s NJPW deal set to expire at the end of January, rumors have been swirling about Okada’s next move.
Per the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Okada filed an application on January 12 to trademark the term ‘RAINMAKER’.
‘The Rainmaker’ is notably Okada’s established nickname in wrestling.
The following description accompanied the filing:
Entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests; Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibits and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer; Entertainment services, namely, live appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer;
Entertainment services, namely, personal appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer; Entertainment services, namely, televised appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainer; Providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network
With Okada filing to trademark his nickname with the United States Patent & Trademark Office, that would suggest he could be preparing to wrestle more in the US.
Previous reports have indicated that WWE has a ‘renewed interest‘ in Okada, fuelling rumors that we could soon see the Japanese star in a WWE ring.
It had been reported that part of the reason for WWE pushing Shinsuke Nakamura recently was to show the likes of Okada that WWE will treat Japanese stars seriously in today’s day and age.
It has also been speculated that if Okada doesn’t re-sign with NJPW, he could join AEW, as he has appeared for the company on several occasions.
Michael E. Dockins was listed as the attorney of record. Dockins has helped a number of AEW stars file for trademarks, as well as many other wrestlers who work outside of WWE.
While we haven’t had an official update on Okada’s contract status ahead of his current deal expiring, NJPW recently provided an intriguing update on Okada’s future, which you can read more about right here.
