Another WWE champion has suffered an injury this past week and could potentially be facing some time out of action.

UPDATE: Chelsea Green has confirmed she suffered a broken orbital bone on SmackDown.

At SummerSlam 2026 last weekend, Chelsea Green won a five-woman ladder match – which also included Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Lash Legend and Tiffany Stratton – to become Interim WWE Women’s Champion.

The interim champion needed to be crowned due to WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley being out due to an injury she suffered back in June, which has required her to undergo surgery and put her on the shelf.

However, just after Green won the title, she’s reportedly picked up an injury of her own.

Last night’s WWE SmackDown played host to a tag team match that saw Green team with Women’s United States Champion Tiffany Stratton against Women’s Tag Team Champions Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid of Fatal Influence.

The match carried the stipulation that if Henley and Reid won, Jayne would get a shot at Stratton’s title next week – Henley and Reid did win, with Henley pinning Green, so that match is confirmed for Friday, August 14.

However, Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer reports that Green picked up an injury. He wrote:

“Chelsea Green was injured during the match on Smackdown last night. We don’t know the exact injury at this point but hopefully she won’t be out of action too long.”

WWE’s Non-Committal Crowning Of Chelsea Green

Chelsea Green has long been seen as someone underutilized in WWE, as the company has used her as an undercard comedy figure despite her growth in popularity.

She finally got her moment at SummerSlam when she pulled down the WWE Women’s Championship belt from above the ring in the ladder match, but WWE hasn’t exactly given her full star treatment just yet.

It’s very obvious that being an interim champion is a runner-up prize, because otherwise WWE would have fully stripped Rhea Ripley of the title and made Green the full rather than interim champion.

During the week, it emerged that Ripley had undergone surgery and thus would be out of action for longer than first thought.

Then on SmackDown, while Green was announced as the “new WWE Women’s Champion” by the ring announcer, she was still listed as the interim champion on her nameplate graphic, and is still listed as that on WWE’s website as well.

And on top of that, she actually ate the pinfall on SmackDown in her very first match since becoming interim champion.

Green got the nice moment at SummerSlam, but it’s very obvious WWE isn’t going all the way with her.
