WWE Wanted Female Star To Be ‘Like Mike Tyson’

WWE Wanted Female Star To Be ‘Like Mike Tyson’ AEW

The real reason for an infamous Shayna Baszler angle has now been revealed, with backstage details emerging on this creative decision.

The former NXT Women’s Champion joined the main roster in early 2020. She immediately entered a rivalry with Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, with the duo involved in an interesting angle on the February 10, 2020 edition of Raw.

On this show, Baszler choked Lynch out, before biting the back of her neck and making Lynch bleed. While some fans liked the savageness of this segment, it was also heavily criticised online by fans who thought that it was unnecessary.

Speaking with Sean Ross Sapp for Fightful, Baszler noted that WWE wanted Baszler to go viral on social media following her main roster debut.

Noting that WWE wanted to present her as the Mike Tyson of the women’s division, Baszler recalled:

“They wanted something that would make me trend on Twitter. It worked. I was like, ‘I mean, I have this gnarly arm stomp.’

“They were like, ‘No, no, no.’ We want you to be like the Mike Tyson of the division.’ I was like, ‘You think they’re gonna think Mike Tyson after this? Okay. You got it.’ But I trended on Twitter, so who am I to say?

“I just came up to main roster. I was doing my job getting myself to trend on Twitter. That’s it.”

Mike Tyson notably bit a piece of Evander Holyfield’s ear off during their June 1997 boxing match.

The Queen of Spades most recently competed in the WWE Women’s World Title #1 contender’s battle royal on the November 6 edition of Raw, which was ultimately won by Zoey Stark, who will challenge for Rhea Ripley’s gold at Survivor Series WarGames 2023.

Bazler recently fuelled speculation about a potential WWE signing, naming a top prospect as her dream opponent.
