WWE legend John Cena has downplayed the importance of having “chemistry” with your opponent, naming the thing that’s much more important.

Fans, pundits and even wrestlers often point out that two talents have great chemistry in the ring with each other, something Cena had a with a number of opponents throughout his career, namely AJ Styles and CM Punk among others.

However, Cena himself has stated that chemistry isn’t as important as “authenticity,” and chemistry is really just a bonus.

Speaking on Slice Joint, he explained:

“I would say it’s not as important as authenticity.

“Chemistry is fun because you don’t have to worry about mechanically achieving something – you can strictly put all your resources towards physical creativity.

“If you are unauthentic, the audience can see through bulls**t.

“Authenticity, believability and character is the most important metric. All the other stuff is a bonus.”

At Backlash, he made the announcement of the John Cena Classic – a concept we haven’t heard much about since – with Cena admitting that there are still a number of aspects of it that need to be figured out.

However, the expectation has been that later in 2026 will be when the Classic takes place, so we’ll continue to keep you posted with any updates on it as they emerge.

From Cena’s original announcement, it appeared to be a tournament, but one where the actual winners of the matches don’t matter as the results would be determined by fans voting who they’d prefer to advance.
