AEW Regular Reveals He Rejected Offer From WWE WWE

An influential NJPW name who appears pretty regularly in AEW has revealed that WWE had an interest in them for a tournament appearance in 2016.

Rocky Romero acts as the liaison for NJPW and their partners across wrestling and recently discussed the challenges of structuring AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.

Beyond NJPW. Romero has ties to AEW and Impact Wrestling and previously had runs in Ring of Honor, Lucha Libre AAA WorldWide and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL).

He has, however, not graced the WWE ring, despite past interest from the company that he recently discussed.

On the Phil Strum’s Under the Ring podcast, Romero revealed that he could have been a participant in the 2016 Cruiserweight Classic, saying:

“So they (WWE) really wanted me for the Cruiserweight Classic and I was in between or about to be in between contracts. I think I was in between contracts and we were renegotiating mine and WWE was very interested.

“They wanted to offer me the Cruiserweight Classic and then they wanted to offer me a coaching position so I think if they didn’t offer me the coaching position and they just offered me the Cruiserweight Classic then I probably, maybe would have waited a little bit longer to re-sign with New Japan and I would have done that but them offering me the coaching position made me feel like they didn’t want me to wrestle so that it wasn’t maybe gonna go very far in the Cruiserweight so I decided to not take it and re-sign with New Japan.”

With Romero believing that the offer a coaching deal would have brought his in-ring career to an end under WWE, he went on to add:

“I feel like the last two years have been some of my best years in the business so, I’m glad that I did not take the coaching deal; now, for sure.”

The Cruiserweight Classic Tournament took place between June and September 2016 and featured 32 wrestlers from around the world with qualifying matches taking place in prominent international promotions including Evolve, Progress Wrestling and Revolution Pro Wrestling.
