WWE could scrap a planned title change if history repeats following recent controversial comments from a top superstar.
With Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler now announced for a WrestleMania Showcase tag team match against Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez, Natalya & Shotzi and Chelsea Green & Sonya Deville, it’s a long way from original rumors that Rousey would be heading into WrestleMania season as SmackDown Women’s Champion.
Rousey, according to past reports, had pushed for the tag team with Baszler and previous reports had suggested that the pair would contest for a Women’s Tag Team Championship on the two-night premium live event.
With Rousey suffering an arm injury, the Women’s Tag Team Championship match hasn’t materialised with Dave Meltzer previously stating that the “decision was made to nix the planned storyline.”
Meltzer has now reported that “Rousey & Baszler were planned for a title run”.
Rousey has recently been critical of WWE creative in the women’s division, referring to being “hamstrung by a bunch of octagenarians” in reference to her past feud with Liv Morgan.
It was also reported that Rousey wasn’t the only one underwhelmed by the booking of the women’s division, with sources saying “the women have struggled to gain traction this WrestleMania season.”
If a title change were still in the picture to elevate Rousey and Baszler to WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion, WWE has a history of changing plans following a superstar outburst.
As has been noted by Dave Meltzer in the current Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required):
“… after an outburst like this in WWE with Steve Austin 21 years ago, that he was then booked on Raw to lose to Brock Lesnar (which he quit over thinking it was stupid business, and it was stupid business and was all about punishment and giving away the long-term big box office potential).”
The WrestleMania Showcase match featuring Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler is set to take place on Night 2 of WrestleMania 39.
It’s not been confirmed but is likely that the winning team – which definitely seemed likely to be Rousey and Baszler, and they’re still the favorites – will be the next team to challenge for the Women’s Tag Team Title, so whatever happens there will likely give us some insight into whether Rousey is being ‘punished’ or not.
