It’s being reported that a WWE star has gotten into a little bit of a trademark battle with the company over her ring name.
Mia Yim (real name Stephanie Bell) currently goes by the name “RECKONING” now that she’s in the RETRIBUTION stable, but WWE had an active trademark filing for “Mia Yim” which she used for several years in NXT.
However, as per Heel By Nature, the United States Patent & Trademark Office is set to cancel the filing later this year.
This is because WWE has failed to provide written consent from Yim. Yim actually filed for the trademark for herself on August 10, along with images proving she’d been using the name since 2009 on the independents.
The USPTO sent WWE a letter on June 11 asking to provide a statement of Yim’s consent, and that has not yet been fulfilled. They still have until December 11 to do so but after that it’ll be cancelled.
Yim did of course include consent when she applied for the trademark herself.
It is unknown how WWE will react to Yim filing for the trademark herself and seemingly not providing her consent for the company to do so.
It’s been very clear as of late that the company is trying to trademark as many of its performers’ names as possible. WrestleTalk.com will keep you updated with any further developments.
