In the latest edition of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the star ratings for NXT Takeover: New Orleans were revealed, announcing for the first time in wrestling history that two matches on the same show have received the full five-stars.
The closest any company has come to this feat was NJPW‘s G1 Climax in 2017, where three consecutive shows received individual accolades with Day 17 putting on a 5* match, Day 18 putting on a 6* match, and Day 19 putting on a 5.75* match.
The first of NXT TakeOver: New Orleans‘ heavily-praised bouts came in the form of a six-man ladder match for the newly created NXT North American Championship. This was contested between Ricochet, Lars Sullivan, Killian Dain, Velveteen Dream, EC3, and winner Adam Cole. Every man in the bout ended up looking fantastic in what is being called the best ladder match of all time. This is the second ladder match to ever receive a five-star rating after Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon at WrestleMania X in 1994.
The second was the main event match between former DIY tag team partners Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa. This was an unsanctioned match with the added stipulation that if Gargano won he would regain his spot on the NXT roster. ‘Johnny Wrestling’ managed to take the match by submission with a knee-brace assisted STF. This is Gargano’s second five-star match this year and the first in the career of Ciampa.
These ratings are subjective of course, as they boil down to being one man’s opinion. With this being the first show to ever feature multiple five-star matches, however, it would lead one to ask the question; was NXT Takeover: New Orleans the best wrestling show in not just WWE history but wrestling history as a whole?
What are your thoughts on NXT TakeOver: New Orleans? Do you think the NXT Championship match between Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas and Aleister Black deserved the third five-star rating of the show? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter here.
