Katsuyori Shibata California Dreamin’ Part 2 has been released by New Japan Pro Wrestling on their YouTube channel. The documentary centers around Katsuyori Shibata’s experience training students at the newly opened L.A. Dojo.
The documentary series continues from the first episode, which followed Katsuyori Shibata as he transitioned from in-ring competitor to coach. While the first episode revolved around Shibata’s feelings towards being retired and his new role, this episode focuses on his training methods.
They interviewed many fellow wrestlers as well as the trainees who all gave their opinions on Shibata and his coaching.
As the L.A. Dojo has been recently opened, Katsuyori Shibata is training the first batch of students to come through the school. Co-trainer Scorpio Sky expressed how difficult Shibata’s training is and how much he is learning just from teaching alongside the former NEVER Openweight Champion.
The students also had a chance to be interviewed and they all discussed their goals and what Katsuyori Shibata being their trainer means to them. Many of them shared the goal of making the full-time New Japan roster, while one said he wanted to be IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, and another said he wanted to wrestle at WrestleKingdom.
The documentary briefly discusses the relationship between Shibata and Hiroshi Tanahashi. They discuss Shibata leaving New Japan Pro Wrestling in the early 2000s and returning to feud with Tanahashi.
Tanahashi and Shibata had real life heat with each other over Shibata leaving the company during its lowest years, so it was interesting to see them talk about it on this New Japan documentary.
Katsuyori Shibata concluded the documentary by saying that his goal is to deliver something to the school that only he can bring, because if anyone else can do it, you don’t need Katsuyori Shibata.
