Despite what has at times, felt like a painfully slow year for WWE, we have – believe it or not – made it through the entirety of 2018, and we’re now in January, terrifyingly close to stepping on the road to WrestleMania. The Royal Rumble always marks the start of a strange, almost self-encapsulated time for WWE storylines, where weird things just seem to happen, and many an odd booking decision is made. Unfortunately, instead of spreading them out and around the year, the majority of NXT call-ups tend to happen between the Rumble, and what is now both the Raw and SmackDown Live after WrestleMania.
Whilst yes, call-ups are an integral part of the modern WWE model, and can certainly lead to some great things – they tend to be done in batches, and often leave talent to flounder for a while with no legitimate direction. There’s been more than one recent instance of NXT megastars debuting to an insane pop, but then for all intents and purposes, completely disappearing and being more or less relegated to house show workers. Then again, there have been some superstars achieving almost no measure of success on NXT, then being called up and finding themselves over as anything. We’re looking at 10 main roster call-ups, and how they’ve changed a wrestler’s career, for better – or worse.
