Chris Jericho Was Told He Would Beat Kevin Owens For The Universal Title In WrestleMania 33 Main Event

Wrestling fans will look back very fondly on the Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens alliance and later feud between 2016 and 2017. This was arguably some of both Jericho and Owens’ best work in their storied WWE careers, and the pair were the most entertaining act in the whole of the company.

However, it is not only wrestling fans that seem to look back fondly on that programme, as Jericho revealed when speaking on Busted Open Radio that if he were to go back to WWE tomorrow, he would want to restart his feud with the “Prize Fighter”:

“What else could I do in WWE? If I went back tomorrow, I probably restart the feud with Kevin Owens. To be honest with you, the feud that I had with him in 2016 was probably the best thing on the show. And where were we at WrestleMania? Second on the card. It’s the same thing that happened in WCW.”

Jericho would also later allude to his WrestleMania 33 clash with the former NXT Champion, and revealed that Vince McMahon initially told him the plan was for him to beat Owens for the Universal Championship in the main event of the show:

“I can’t get any higher than where I’m at. Even though I’d been to the top, if you can’t put Jericho and Owens in the semi-main event at WrestleMania, especially when at one point, it was slotted to be the main event. In the eyes of the old man [Vince McMahon], a main event is a mainevent. From a business perspective. I’ll take first over anything. Second is, to me, not a filler spot, but it’s a spot where you get your 15 minutes. To be on second, with this angle that we had, when it was designated at first, I was told by Vince, ‘You’re gonna win the World Title from Kevin Owens in the main event of WrestleMania.’ Three days later he changed it to Brock vs. Goldberg and didn’t tell me.”

Instead, their clash was for the United States Championship, with Owens picking up the win. Jericho revealed in an earlier interview that Vince McMahon said it was one of the worst WrestleMania matches in history, and ordered Owens to lose some weight as a result.
