Recently Dave Meltzer claimed that Will Ospreay was better that Kazuchika Okada after the Briton’s incredibly impressive Best of the Super Juniors final win over Shingo Takagi.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer has continued to praise Ospreay, saying that he is the best in the world.
“All year, it’s been the battle of Ospreay or Kento Miyahara as the best in the world. That battle is clearly over. Everyone’s fighting for second.”
On the topic of Ospreay’s match with Shingo Takagi, Meltzer clearly thought extremely highly of it:
“To say they had a great match does this a disservice. Ospreay is just a different level… I would call [it] the best junior heavyweight match I’ve ever seen and one of the best matches in any division”
In the newsletter, Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole were handed a fantastic five and a quarter star rating for their NXT Championship clash at NXT Takeover: XXV. However, Ospreay and Takagi surpassed that, receiving five and three-quarter stars for their main event match.
Meltzer not only praised Ospreay’s in-ring work, but also his abilities on the mic. Meltzer believes that Ospreay actually overshadowed the debuting Jon Moxley:
“While you can talk all the superlatives about Ospreay’s tournament, and even more about the final match, which I would call the best junior heavyweight match I’ve ever seen and one of the best matches in any division, but it was the promos, the one after beating Taguchi and the other two after beating Takagi that drove this one home. As great as Jay White is, and he is, and will be positioned as a top guy barring injury (two straight wins over Tanahashi drives that home), Ospreay blew past him at Sumo Hall. As much of a breakout performance as Jon Moxley had, Ospreay left him in the dust.”
On the topic of the aforementioned Jon Moxley vs. Juice Robinson match where Moxley won the IWGP United States Championship in his first bout since leaving WWE, Meltzer gave it four and half stars.
