AEW announced yesterday that a brand new TNT Championship will be awarded at Double or Nothing in May. An eight-man tournament will commence on the 04/08 episode of Dynamite, with the two winners advancing at a match at the pay-per-view.
For those who might not be aware, the title has been named the TNT Championship because this is the network that AEW is on in the US. However, this isn’t the first time someone has pitched to name a title after a network station.
Taking to Twitter, former WWE star Shane Helms revealed that he once asked Vince McMahon if he could refer to the Cruiserweight Championship as the CW Championship as the show was on the CW Network.
Unsurprisingly, Vince McMahon wasn’t too fond of the name change and rejected Helms’ pitch. However, it seems like Hurricane as actually years ahead of the curve.
I once asked VKM could I refer to the Cruiserweight Championship as the CW Championship since we were on the CW Network? He just looked at me and said, “Why would you do that?” I replied, “I guess I wouldn’t.” And I walked away. 😂🤷🏻♂️

I have seen many people online question AEW’s decision to announce the title during these incredibly uncertain times, and I have to agree. There is no guarantee that shows will be happening from the next week or two, so announcing a tournament seems short-sighted.
