During a conference call with the media yesterday ahead of this weekend’s NXT TakeOver: In Your House show, Triple H strongly implied that he was surprised by the firings of several NXT stars, including Drake Maverick. This has been confirmed by Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer, who has indicated that all firings were made by Vince McMahon himself.
Many people speculated that Maverick was never actually fired by WWE, and this whole released storyline was part of a storyline to get him over as a babyface. However, all reports seem to indicate that this was not the case.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Live episode, Bryan Alvarez has confirmed that this was not a work, and that Maverick was indeed fired and then re-hired. Alvarez added that both decisions were made by Vince McMahon himself:
“Every one of the people who got fired was a Vince McMahon call. I’m pretty confident — because I’ve been told this from people — that people got released that if Hunter had his way would have not been released. So they fired all these people including Drake Maverick and Drake did the deal [emotional video]. This means that Vince must have seen his promo that went viral and said, ‘Look at this guy, pal! Hire him back! Everything was a Vince call. Firing and re-hiring Drake.”
Many people have found this storyline to be incredibly exploitative, including a former champion in NXT who was released on the same day in April as Drake Maverick. You can read more about that story by clicking here.
