After weeks of rumours, it is now being reported that WWE has acquired EVOLVE Wrestling. Mike Johnson of PWInsider reported the news earlier today.
It was reported last month that EVOLVE Vice President Gabe Sapolsky had said the promotion would not be running more shows in the future. The promotion was hit very hard by the pandemic as they were forced to cancel their WrestleMania weekend shows. This loss of revenue led to discussions with WWE opening up regarding a potential sale.
There is currently no word on whether talent will be transferred from EVOLVE to WWE in the deal. Some AEW stars are currently listed on the website’s active roster, however, this has likely not been updated in some time.
WWE and EVOLVE have had a working relationship since 2015. WWE has sent talent to EVOLVE shows over the years while many of the stars in NXT went through the promotion during their careers.
Previous reports indicated that the sale could be for the tape library of the promotion. While those reports have now been proven false, WWE will now have access to shows featuring many of their talents. Stars such as Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, Drew McIntyre, and Johnny Gargano all went through the promotion at some point.
It is also important to note that WWE has not acquired WWN Live but rather just the EVOLVE Wrestling branch of the company.
