Last night’s The Horror Show at Extreme Rules pay-per-view was set to see Apollo Crews defend his United States Championship against MVP.
However, WWE announced on commentary during the show that Crews had suffered an injury following an attack by MVP and Lashley, and was unable to compete.
As such, MVP announced that he had won the United States Championship via forfeit, asking Lashley to present him with the title. You can watch exactly what happened below.
As such, there was a bit of confusion regarding who is the actual United States Champion. WWE.com still recognises Apollo Crews as the champion, and commentary seemed to put that over on the show
While WWE said that Crews’ absence was because of an injury, a new report has indicated that it was actually related to COVID-19.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that the reason Apollo wasn’t on the show was linked to COVID. It’s important to note that he did not outright say Crews had tested positive for the virus.
Some people have criticised WWE for not announcing that Crews wouldn’t be on the show sooner. However, it is entirely possible that they didn’t know until the very last minute.
