While Sami Zayn might not want to hear it, officially, he is the new WWE Intercontinental Champion. In what ended up being the only title change of the night, Zayn was able to win the ladder match, overcoming AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy.
Hardy entered the match as the official Intercontinental Champion but he was unable to retain his title. Despite being hit with a huge Swanton Bomb off a ladder, Zayn was able to recover. He used his cunning, utilizing two pairs of handcuffs to get the win.
Zayn cuffed Hardy to a ladder using his ear gauge, rendering him largely useless for the rest of the match. He ultimately used the other pair of handcuffs to latch Styles to the ladder through one of the rungs, meaning Zayn was able to climb the ladder and secure the win.
Zayn never considered Styles or Hardy the true champion. Zayn was the titleholder when he left SmackDown at the beginning of the pandemic. When he returned, Hardy had already been crowned the new champion, having beaten Styles. Now, Zayn can rest assured that he is the champion in everyone’s mind, not just his own.
