Last night’s WWE Raw was met with a lot of criticism for several of the booking decisions. Fans debated what was the most egregious error of the night. The list included the booking of Keith Lee, RETRIBUTION losing, RETRIBUTION getting beaten up by The Fiend 1 on 4, Peyton Royce and Lacey Evans inexplicably teaming together, or the finish of the show cutting off before any physicality occurred.
Speaking of the finish of the show, many fans were left wondering if this was the plan all along. PWInsider has revealed some backstage details on the finish and timing of the show:
“The closing of last night’s Monday Night Raw, with Drew McIntyre closing the door on the Hell In A Cell went off the air as it was envisioned. We’ve had a few readers ask if perhaps the company was running late with the segment and ran out of time, but we have been told by multiple sources that the ending we saw was the ending Vince McMahon approved.”
Many people were clamoring for actually seeing the two stars go at it. However, this is the exact effect Vince McMahon and WWE should be hoping for.
You want the closing angle on the go-home show to leave fans wanting to see more. You want to give them a reason to tune in on Sunday.
The problem is WWE has done such a poor job of this in recent years fans no longer expect it. Instead of it having the desired effect, fans assume something went wrong on the show.
Look at the case of Orton and McIntyre. They’ve fought so much and had so much physicality already, why would WWE hold off now? They’ve battled in a ring and all over an arena. What’s left to keep from fans?
Well, in this case, the two fighting in a cell. Vince actually made a sound, old-school booking decision, but it is so rare these days, fans can’t even recognize it as purposeful.
If the angle did, in fact, leave you eager to see them fight, then you can watch along with WrestleTalk this Sunday. As always, we will be providing live coverage on the website and live reactions on YouTube.
