A decade ago the working relationship between TNA and New Japan Pro Wrestling was the largest in the wrestling world. New Japan would send young stars to TNA to learn the American style but this only lasted so long.
Eventually, New Japan got tired of the poor treatment of talent like Kazuchika Okada and the relationship was dropped. It has been very difficult for New Japan to bury this hatchet as it has been reported several times that they were still holding a grudge against Impact despite none of the people in charge of the promotion in 2011 still working there.
Now, it appears they have softened their stance. Fightful Select (subscription required) has reported on how Impact star Chris Bey was invited to take part in New Japan’s Super J-Cup tournament.
As Bey told them, he was pitched the idea of being included but didn’t think he would be able to. That was before he found out that Scott D’Amore and New Japan had already worked it out.
This would lead one to believe that the two sides are much more open to working with each other than they once were. Impact executive Don Callis has significant history with New Japan and has wanted the two promotions to work together for a long time.
