Former NXT wrestler Bull Dempsey, real name James Edward Smith II, has filed a defamation lawsuit following accusations against him.
The lawsuit was filed against four parties on March 26 at Kings County Supreme Court in Brooklyn, New York.
The suit claims the defendants made false accusations against Smith via social media that “caused irreparable harm” to his “personal and professional reputation, putting the future of his business and career in jeopardy as well as his ability to defend his reputation”.
One of the defendants is a woman Smith had previously been in a relationship with.
In 2017, she made claims against him on social media, and later that year, they entered a settlement agreement in open court, that she “would not mention the Plaintiff (Smith) in any form of social media, or in any way defame his reputation”.
Smith claims that by making claims against him this past Summer during the #SpeakingOut movement, she has breached those conditions and he has “suffered damages” as a result.
Smith also claims that one accusation of him interacting with a 17-year-old girl inappropriately was fabricated by two of the defendants.
He is seeking damages “in an amount appropriate to punish Defendants”, an “order of protection”, for “Defendants to undertake such remedial efforts as the Court deems necessary to restore Plaintiff’s reputation, including, but not limited to a public apology and retraction”, and attorney’s fees and costs permitted by law.
Smith, 33, worked for NXT as Bull Dempsey from 2013 to 2016 before returning to the independent scene and promoting shows for Outlaw Wrestling.
