AEW star Jon Moxley has explained why he’s ‘over’ the wrestling phrase ‘forbidden door’.
The term was coined by Hiroshi Tanahashi ahead of Wrestle Kingdom 14 in 2020, promising that if he’d score a victory over then-AEW World Champion Chris Jericho at the NJPW event, he’d open the ‘forbidden door’ and challenge for the title on Dynamite.
Speaking on The Sessions with his wife, Renee Paquette, Moxley pointed out that AEW and NJPW have maintained a working relationship for some time, so the door isn’t really ‘forbidden’ anymore:
“I really am over that term, myself, everybody is using it.”
“So, the door’s not ‘forbidden.’ There are ‘forbidden doors’ but there does not exist one between AEW and New Japan. I’ve been in New Japan for three years and I’ve been in AEW for three years. I’ve been in both this whole time.
“The relationship was not good, so I was a good neutral party, I think, to help bridge the gap over the past few years. I love both and owe so much to both.”
AEW and NJPW announced a working partnership in February 2021, following KENTA’s appearance during the Dynamite: Beach Break special.
At AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, Jon Moxley and Hiroshi Tanahashi will face off for the interim AEW World Championship.
