There has been a major update on the status of John Cena for next year’s WrestleMania 39 event in Los Angeles.
Cena last wrestled for WWE back at SummerSlam in 2021, coming up short against Roman Reigns in a Universal Championship bout, his only match of the year.
Cena has wrestled a match in every year for WWE since his debut back in 2002, but that 20 year streak seems set to come to an end this year.
Cena’s only WWE appearance this year was on the June 27 episode of Raw, where the company celebrated 20 years since his debut.
While it seems extremely unlikely that Cena will wrestle in 2022, we may be in for more luck seeing him wrestle in 2023.
Speaking with GiveMeSport’s Louis Dangoor, the WrestleVotes Twitter account provided an update on Cena’s status for the show.
They said:
Cena should be there and Cena should be wrestling
Many had speculated that it would be less likely for the 16-time World Champion to make his WWE return following the retirement of Vince McMahon.
However, WrestleVotes continued on, noting that Vince’s retirement won’t make a return less likely.
They said:
I know he touches base every so often, and although Vince is out of the picture, Cena still has a love for this place. John Cena and Triple H have a respect for each other.
Finally, WrestleVotes noted that if Cena is trying to be ‘the next Rock’, then he should appear on WrestleMania in Hollywood, before once again noting that they think he will be there.
They added:
WrestleMania is still WrestleMania and it’s in Los Angeles.
If Cena is legitimately trying to be ‘the next Rock’ you should perform at WrestleMania in Hollywood, and I think he’ll be there and I think it’ll be wrestling. I’ll leave it at that.
Many had speculated that Cena would take on Austin Theory in a match at this year’s SummerSlam, which ultimately never ended up taking place.
