A WWE Hall of Famer has reflected on a long-running wrestling rivalry and believes it could have been ended sooner.
The legendary rivalry between Ric Flair and Sting crossed the decades.
It started in NWA in the 80s, moved to WCW in to 90s and 2002 and onto TNA in 2011.
One moment that many consider a misstep was the revelation that Flair was The Black Scorpion after his unmasking at Starrcade in 1990.
The Black Scorpion had been pursuing Sting since August 1990, though Flair hadn’t been under the mask for the majority of the storyline.
Reflecting on the story and the rivalry on his ARN podcast (subscription required), Arn Anderson said:
“I would’ve loved to have seen Sting get away from Flair.
“Anyway you look at it then when it all shakes out and you find out it was Flair all along, then if you were semi-tired of Flair and Sting now you’re really tired of it.”
Arn went on to express his belief that there could have been more for Sting as WCW Champion beyond the rivalry with Flair, saying:
“I just think Sting, if he’d maybe made a bigger loop with Sid [Vicious].
“My god, you could have put Sting with Ron Simmons in a singles match or Butch Reed in a single match, just to get him some wins over some different opponents.
“He needed a longer push as champion.”
Sting was the six-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
He signed with AEW in 2020 and returned to in-ring competition in 2021.
He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016.
