Triple H’s latest WWE signing was officially announced last night at the AAA Noche De Campeones event, when Dragon Lee announced that he was heading to WWE.
Triple H and WWE have since commented on the signing, with him being touted as a big signing for the NXT brand.
It has since been reported by Dave Meltzer that the deal to bring in Dragon Lee was finalised two weeks ago, and that AAA were aware he was heading to WWE before last night’s show.
Fightful Select (subscription required) has learned more information regarding Lee’s WWE signing, and how it came about.
Fightful confirmed the report that WWE’s interest in bringing in Dragon Lee begun after his appearance on AEW Dynamite earlier this year. WWE then ‘swooped in’ and reached an agreement with him once they learned he was not contracted to AEW.
Those that spoke to Fightful noted that Lee pushed for his brother Dralistico to also joi him in WWE, but WWE passed on signing Dralistico for the time being.
Fightful notes that it was indicated to them that a ‘big NXT signing’ would be announced on Thursday, but no further details were given.
The report also notes that Dragon Lee’s deal with the company was for more of an ‘NXT scale’ deal, rather than a Raw or SmackDown scale deal.
WWE had cameras filming at last night’s AAA show, and Dragon Lee will report to the WWE Performance Center over the next few weeks.
Fightful’s report notes that AAA was aware that the signing was coming, at least as of a couple of weeks ago, and made sure to inform people on a need to know basis that was happening.
As for AEW, Fightful notes that those they spoke to didn’t believe the company was caught off guard by it.
ESPN also highlighted that WWE star Finn Balor reached out to Dragon Lee to help complete the deal.
Fightful was told that more situations like that could happen for high profile free agents in the coming years.
