John Cena is returning to WWE Raw on March 6, likely to set up his WrestleMania 39 match, but his planned opponent changed not long ago.
Cena vs current United States Champion Austin Theory has been “locked in” for WrestleMania for a little while now, but that wasn’t always the case.
WWE had planted seeds for a Cena vs Theory match as far back as July last year when the hope was to do it at SummerSlam, but Cena wasn’t available.
We’ve now circled back around to doing it at WrestleMania instead, but according to WrestlingNews.co, “sometime in the fall”, WWE had Cena “penciled in” for a match against Logan Paul instead.
Paul had even publicly called out Cena, which, even though he’s Logan Paul, the respect he’s shown for his role in WWE so far suggests he wouldn’t have done that without approval.
The report states that Cena vs Paul was the plan “as of December”, but obviously by January, things changed to Paul vs Seth Rollins, and Cena vs Theory.
WrestlingNews.co states that sources said Cena “absolutely” believes Theory has everything it takes to become a main eventer, and that’s a sentiment shared by WWE management.
For those who don’t know, John Cena is legitimately Theory’s childhood hero.
