With WrestleMania 39 fast approaching, an update has been provided on plans for the Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER.
Fightful Select (subscription required) reports that the plans for the current WWE Intercontinental Champion have been “solidly in place” since December.
It’s also noted that “by the time the world found out about the possibility of Brock Lesnar vs. Gunther, it was already off the table.”
The March 10 episode of WWE SmackDown saw both Sheamus and Drew McIntyre pinning opponents at the same time in a five-way match.
This led to a backstage interview in which GUNTHER made it clear that he wanted a “challenger” not “challengers”.
This was a sentiment that was echoed by Sheamus on social media in no uncertain terms.
Whilst the WWE fans may want a triple threat for the Intercontinental Championship, it seems that the champion does not.
A match has been announced for this coming Friday’s SmackDown between Sheamus and McIntyre that will allegedly decide GUNTHER’s singular challenger at Mania.
Whilst Brock Lesnar will be facing Omos at WrestleMania 39 on April 1 & 2, GUNTHER has expressed the belief that a match against Lesnar is likely to happen in the future.
